October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
KOVA Foundation created Emma’s Wish to grant a variety of wishes for stage IV breast cancer patients. Here is a heart-warming story about one of Emma’s Wish recipients, Sonia.
When you first meet Sonia, you are greeted by a vibrant and out-going individual. She is someone you would love to sit down with, to enjoy a glass of iced tea and a long conversation. Sonia is a beautiful, dedicated mother of three, who has a positive demeanor and a smile for everyone she meets.
Sonia has been struggling with stage IV breast cancer for nearly 15 years. Every Friday she goes to her “spa day,” which is her way to spin her weekly chemo treatments into a positive experience. She will tell you the staff fusses over her and pampers her during treatments, by offering her comforting items, such as a warm blanket, snacks, and drinks.
While she is humbled by all the attention, the caretakers, nurses, and Lee Health Cancer Navigators provide, she certainly appreciates all that they do for her.
Sonia deals with the side effects of her chemo treatment every week. However, she puts on a brave face and brings out her inner warrior, which encourages her to continue the journey forward. She wants others to know that when faced with cancer, they are not alone. For her, it is her faith, her family, and the people around her that keep her going.
Earlier this year, Sonia’s Lee Health Cancer Patient Navigator nominated her for Emma’s Wish. Her wish was simply to visit her daughter and son-in-law in Puerto Rico.
Emma’s Wish granted her wish to visit her family and make memories to last a lifetime.
Sonia was recently interviewed by Taylor Petras of WINK News. She hopes that sharing her story will help others. We encourage you to watch the interview on WINK TV on October 1st and learn more about Sonia and the medical staff that supports patients like her.
